The Truckers handshake

Yesterday afternoon I was interviewed on BBC Radio WM by Danny Kelly who asked me several questions related to the spotting of lorries. One of which was the origin of the "Truckers handshake" which is when a lorry overtakes another on the motorway and the vehicle being overtaken flashes the overtaking vehicle to indicate they can pull in. The lorry infront then indicates left, right, left and right again to acknowledge and thank the lorry behind. Where did this originate and when, if anybody knows could they email Danny danny.kelly@bbc.co.uk.
